Careers in Business Services

Business services are the support functions that enable business enterprises to conduct their operations. These include banking, transportation and warehousing services as well as insurance and communication services. They are a vital part of the “servitisation” of the European economy and are used by both goods-producing and service-providing sectors.

These services are characterized by the fact that they are intangible, do not result in the creation of any physical product and cannot be stored like inventory for use at a later time. They are often a component of a larger service, such as an IT service or a broader customer service offering. They also have the characteristic that they are consumed at the same time as they are produced.

Many jobs in the business services sector can be done from home or any location with a reliable Internet connection, Spinelli says. This is great for people who are not interested in commuting or want a flexible work schedule.

For example, a high school diploma and computer skills are enough to get a job as an administrative assistant or janitor, but a bachelor’s degree in accounting, software engineering, or IT is required to advance into management roles. To succeed in these careers, you should be passionate about creating solutions for other businesses and have strong interpersonal skills, she adds. You will need to be able to communicate with and motivate teams of people, she notes. Moreover, you should be proficient in technology to use tools such as automated workflows and business intelligence.
