Home Improvement Trends for 2011

Home improvement

Home improvement is one of the biggest segments of spending by homeowners. People renovate their homes for a variety of reasons, including adding value to their property, selling it or simply making the house more comfortable for their family. It’s important to do your research before hiring a contractor and to know what the typical costs are for the most popular home renovation projects.

TV schedules are filled to the brim with shows like Fixer Upper and This Old House, and it’s easy to get caught up in the dream of giving your home a makeover. But it’s important to think twice about what types of upgrades actually add value and which ones don’t. In fact, some projects could even detract from your home’s resale value, according to research from the contractor search service Angi and the real estate site Realtor.

Rock-bottom interest rates are making home improvement projects more attractive, and the categories that have surged most this year include building decks (up 275%), installing fences and hiring landscapers. But these aren’t necessarily the types of improvements that will boost your home’s resale price, especially if your neighborhood isn’t in a high demand area.
